The Primary Nutrients:
Acetyl-L-Choline (ALC) – is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain. It is a ‘trigger’, releasing acetylcholine to allow our neurons to communicate with each other. It is vital for a good mood, mental alertness, concentration, focus, and memory. Acetylcholine helps the brain connect different parts of memory together, such as a name with a face, concentration, and speech. These are qualities that are dimmed with dementia and Alzheimer’s – and greatly restored with acetylcholine. No wonder it is the most researched and used nutrient – used by doctors – in the cognitive medical field!
CDP Choline – This is the most potent and effective source of increasing acetylcholine compared to other choline supplements. It crosses the blood brain barrier very easily and helps more acetylcholine to be produced in the brain than other choline supplements. It is also known for being very safe with few associated side effects. This makes it our choice for a choline source.
DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA)– is a precursor of tyrosine – which the body uses to produce dopamine. Dopamine is the mood elevating chemical beneficial for both increasing energy and mental alertness. Several clinical studies show that DLPA is regarded as safe and useful for easing symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety levels. (DLPA is also thought to provide some relief to those suffering from ADHD and even Parkinson’s disease.)
Huperzine A – As much as we love acetylcholine, sometimes the body needs to break down excessive quantities of acetylcholine. Excessive acetylcholine prevents it from breaking down neurotransmitters in the brain. (Most Alzheimer’s medications also limit the release of Acetylcholinesterase for the same reason.) Huperzine A acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor to balance acetylcholine levels in the brain. Research has shown it to be effective in improving cognition in patients with Alzheimer’s and in enhancing memory.
L-Tyrosine and L-Theanine – are both noted to improve dopamine levels.
L-Tyrosine is transformed into ‘L-Dopa’ and L-Dopa is then converted to dopamine. As a result, tyrosine helps enhance mood, sleep, emotional well-being, and cognitive/mental function. Also, some people are genetically programmed to make too little dopamine and tyrosine helps solve that.
L-Theanine, also found in green tea, also helps increase serotonin and GABA. It creates an alert state of relaxation without drowsiness. It also has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and work as an anti-depressant with anti-anxiety effects. This reduces mental and physical stress and leads to improvements in learning and memory in humans and animals.
Mucuna Pruriens (with *L-Dopa) – L-Dopa is frequently taken for anti-aging and life extension purposes. It is essential to help preserve and replace dopamine cells in our brain. (When more than 70% of your dopamine-producing neurons have been depleted, symptoms of Parkinson’s disease begin to appear.) We prefer L-dopa over dopamine supplements because L-dopa can cross the blood-brain barrier and be converted to dopamine in the brain.
The best source of L-dopa is mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) because it can also help produce serotonin and norepinephrine to help prevent depression, sadness, lack of focus and low motivation. It is best taken with food.
Rhodiola rosea (golden root) – enhances the stability of dopamine leading to notable decreases in depression, anxiety, and fatigue, as well as an increased ability to handle stress. All this helps with both mental stability and weight loss as well.
CDP Choline (Citicoline) – This packs a nice punch as a nootropic because it also is quickly converted to uridine. Uridine is a nootropic in its own right that lends a hand in PC creation. This makes citicoline a two-in-one nootropic!
PQQ and Co-Q10 – Co-Q10, of course, is now well known to increase the energy output of the little mitochondria. (Mitochondria are throughout our body and convert nutrients into energy.) Mitochondria are especially numerous in our brain because the brain can use a third of all the energy production in our body! What most people don’t know is that PQQ is used by our body to make more mitochondria! Obviously, a combination of the two is very helpful for thinking.
Rhodiola rosea, 5-HTP and Vinpocetine – are also included, along with some needed B vitamins and mineral to make this a complete package for helping our brain and memory functions!
Our Mind & Memory formula is very flexible in dosage and usage. A person can take just a few capsules a day if they want – or as much as 8-10 capsules a day in more serious cases. Most common is 4-8 capsules a day.
They can be taken with or without food although they are a little more efficient with food. These are not stimulants but it is best not to take them a few hours before bed as your mind might find yourself happily thinking away when you want to be sleeping.
