Preserve More Nutrients in Your Food

July 6, 2016

Freeze-drying is your best option for food preservation

At PPT-Health, our mission is to help you get healthy.  Typically, that means we research the role of vitamins and nutrients in the body and share our knowledge of how to get healthy naturally.

We believe we need to put into our body what it needs to do its job, namely vitamins and nutrients.

The most nutrient rich food is naturally produced fresh food.  All methods of food preparation and preservation reduce the vitamins and nutrients in our food.

However, for many of us, its not always practical to eat fresh, natural foods.  So then what?

Walk down the center aisle at your local grocery store.

You’ll see a variety of time saving methods for preserving food, including drying, dehydrating and canning. These prepackaged, processed meals typically include unhealthy additives, such as sodium nitrate, high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, monosodium glutamate (MSG), food dyes and colors.  What you won’t get as much of is the vitamins and nutrients your body needs.  Dehydrating and canning use high temperatures that destroy nearly 50% of food value.

These foods tend to save money at the checkout counter and save time (in the short-run only) in food preparation at home, but not if you consider that the average American family throws away as much as 40% of their leftovers, which is approximately $2,250 annually!  Not to mention the time it takes to prepare those wasted meals.

There is a better option!

Gardeners and Preppers are leading the way toward a better option for food preservation.  For years we’ve known that freeze drying is the superior technology for food preservation.  But, until recently, freeze-drying was not an option – the entry level cost for this technology was $30,000.  Recently, a company brought to market the Harvest Right In-home Freeze Dryer!  Now, a home freeze dryer is available for purchase and the benefits outweigh the cost.  The founder of PPT-Health was among the first to purchase a Harvest Right freeze-dryer and we’re thrilled to share this experience with you!

Benefits of freeze drying include:

Freeze drying is better for you than any other method of food preservation.  There is no need for use of preservatives and as much as 97% of the nutritional value of your food is retained.  Not to mention, the process requires less of your time and energy than dehydrating and canning.  You can freeze dry almost anything, including your leftovers.  And your food will last much longer – approximately 25 years.  Freeze dried food does not change shape, color or flavor, so it looks and tastes much like the fresh version of the same food.  Only its much lighter!  Within minutes it can be reconstituted and used as if it had never been dried.  For ideas of what can be freeze dried checkout the blog at Harvest Right.

The Harvest Right Freeze Dryer is an appliance we’re using daily.

We have kept a garden for years (read “decades”) and like many gardeners, what we can’t eat or share, we preserve. We’ve slaved in the garden harvesting, then in the kitchen cleaning, cutting, dehydrating, canning, standing-by in a hot kitchen watching thermometers rise, carefully reading directions to keep pace with the newest advancements, wondering how dry is dry enough, cleaning, cleaning and re-cleaning the kitchen and kitchen tools. For us, these days are mostly behind us.

Its making a BIG difference in our lives, so we’re sharing our experience with you.

Watch for recipes we have successfully tested using freeze dried ingredients.  We’ll share before and after pictures of our freeze dried foods.  We’ll let you know the pros and the cons and we’ll celebrate with you when you’re able to purchase your own.  Although we’re not the best source for technical information about this freeze dryer or freeze drying, we’re happy to share what we know.   If you need more technical information, head over to Harvest Right to learn more!
